David Shearer qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1984 where he remained as medicine intern until 1985 during which time he developed an interest in Dermatology. He spent several years in mixed practice before working at the University of Bristol Vet School from 1988-1997. He was Fellow in Veterinary Clinical Dermatology (1 year), then a Wellcome Research Scholar (3 years) and finally Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology (5 years). He obtained the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Dermatology in 1990 and his PhD on the immunology and microbiology of canine pyoderma in 1995. David is currently a RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Dermatology. David has coauthored the ectoparasite textbook designed for students and general pratictioners ‘Veterinary Ectoparasites’. David’s professional interests include cutaneous Immunology, Dermatohistopathology, Ectoparasites and Microbiology. David has worked as both a dermatologist for over 25 years and a diagnostic histopathologist for over 25 years. He currently works as a full time anatomic dermatopathologist for Nationwide Laboratories.
He has been on the management committee of The British Veterinary Dermatology Study Group and is currently President of The International Society of Veterinary Dermatopathology (ISVD).
